My story

Bruce Bradfield - M.A. Clinical Psychology, PhD

Hello, & welcome

I’d like to tell you a bit about myself. I am qualified as a clinical psychologist in South Africa, where I completed my Masters and doctoral studies. I have worked in this field for over twelve years, & I love the work that I do. I’m fascinated by people and am constantly amazed by how people grow and evolve in the face of difficult and painful realities.

People who need people

My approach to therapy prioritises human relationships, & I believe that our connection with those around us is central to emotional health. The relationship with a therapist is a funny type of friendship that is based on care and mutual respect. As a relationship between two people, the therapeutic relationship is all about trying to create a feeling of trust, safety, and relaxation so that we can have honest conversations about your real life. I believe that long-term therapy, as well as a more focused short-term therapy, are both very helpful and powerful tools. After meeting with you and hearing more about your needs, I’ll make a recommendation about how we should proceed.

Feel more to feel alive

I think the goal of therapy isn’t only to feel better, but also to feel more. Learning to think creatively about the things that trouble us, rather than avoiding our feelings. Through this, I think we can develop more effective ways of coping with the difficult situations in our lives. In the long term, this is an empowering and enriching achievement, enabling us to feel joy in the good times and hope in the bad times. Take a look at my updates to learn a bit more about the way I work.

In the field

My work as a psychologist has allowed me the privilege of engaging with a remarkable diversity of people — from across South Africa and far beyond. For over 15 years, I practised as a psychotherapist in private practice in Cape Town. Then, in 2022, I relocated to Copenhagen, Denmark, where I’ve continued my private practice while also lecturing at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad, an international academic institution.

As a lecturer, I’ve worked with students from across North America, each bringing unique perspectives from different corners of their country. In my Copenhagen practice, I’ve primarily worked with members of the international community — people who have made a new life in Denmark but who carry stories, identities, and experiences from all over the globe. In any given week, I might work with individuals from more than fifteen different countries.

This rich cultural mix has been deeply rewarding. It’s sharpened my understanding of what connects us across differences — cultural, historical, racial, political, and personal. It’s been a profound learning journey, and one for which I remain immensely grateful.

Turning the Page: Back to Cape Town

This July 25, I’m heading home to Cape Town — a city that continues to ground and inspire me. I’ll be returning to full-time, in-person practice, working face-to-face with clients in a space that invites real presence and connection. At the same time, I’ll continue to see international clients online, keeping one foot in the wider world while firmly rooted at home. It’s a return, but also a renewal — and I’m excited for what’s next.
